How To write A Monologue?

Steps to Creating a Monologue

  1. Think up a character
  2. Create a character profile
  3. Begin your script
  4. Edit your monologue

step 1: Think up a character

Think up a type of character you want. It's easy to make the character a bit like you, maybe. Because you can understand the character better.

Step 2: Create a character profile

1) First of all; think about the name of your character.
If you can't think of a name yourself, I have some generate sites you can visit:

Here you can find names, or you can choose out which country your name has to come from and you can find the meaning of those names. I use this one often.

This is honestly my favorite name generator site! You can not only generate normal names, there are also generators with fantasy names for fantasy creatures, names for/from movies/series, place name generators(don't know if it are existing places or not), diseases, magic, language, food, drinks, music, curse, spells and more. Short: there are sooooo much generators. So it's not only for when you want to find a name.

Create a identity, with first name, last name and some more information. It's very handy. You just have to choose a gender, the name set and the country where the name has to come from.

Just choose a gender and this site generates a English first and last name and you can see the meaning of the first name. How amazing! And simple!

Another Reedsy? Yes! Here you first have to choose a country. Then everything works the same like that one above this one.

I personality don't use this one much, but that's me! First you have to choose a generator, because, like the FantasyNameGenerator, there are more name generators. But this one has less. By some generators you have to fill in some things.

2) Think about a little biography. Tell something important about the character's past, present and future. Don't forget the things what makes them them.

3) Think about some less important things, but it still might be useful. Think about things like: age, facial expressions, hair, eyes, clothing, speaking style, general demeanor, career, hobbies, likes and dislikes.

Step 3: Begin your script

Begin writing your script. Remember to keep it short and sweet—a monologue should be no longer than one or two pages long and should take about two minutes to deliver (give or take), including all pauses.
Now that you've created a detailed character profile, you should find your path from there simple and easy. Decide whether you want the monologue to be comedic or dramatic, and think about the arc of the monologue. The character should make some discovery or go on some internal journey.

Step 4: Edit your monologue

Editing is an important part of writing your monologue. You have to check for mistakes, if it is a bit to understand and you have to make sure every sentence is necessary.

Well, I hope this helps a bit if you want a monologue! :)
